You have to meet certain criteria set by (PMI) Project Management Institute. You have to clear the exam set by PMP, work experience and have some sort of Project management education.

To be eligible for PMP one must have atleast 3+ years of Project experience. then he can attend 35 hours formal training to get 35 hour’s PDU certificate. PMP Aspirant should contact PMI REP’s only to get their PDU certificate.

To obtain the PMP credential, you must first demonstrate that you are eligible by meeting either of the following eligibility requirements set by Project Management Institute (PMI).

These PMP Eligibility Requirements/criteria has been set by PMI to ensure that any Project Staff who applies and subsequently, clears PMP Examination successfully possess Relevant Work Experience and undergoes formal/structured Project Management Education for at least 35 Contact Hours (Typically Four Days Training Program).

This is to ensure that any project staff across industry verticals who even applies for PMP Certification Exam, is well versed with Best Practices in Project Management – in line with PMI’s Guide to Project Management Body of Knowledge.

From what I know, it’s AIPM, but PMI is respected. But AIPM is more recognized, that’s because it’s specific to Australia and the Australian markets. The AIPM, however, does not offer anything but project management certification. It does not offer program management certification. Probably.

Simply being a manager does not meet the necessary experience requirement. According to PMI’s website, you need:

A four-year degree (bachelor’s or the global equivalent) and at least three years of project management experience, with 4,500 hours leading and directing projects and 35 hours of project management education.

You will also have to have document each of the 4500 project management hours and supply PMI with references to the hours. The experience needs to include some hours in all of the different sections of the PMBOK.

We had a PMI local chapter PMP Workshop and the one true fear of all? participants was understanding the formulas and EV being the most challenging.
