Eligibility to appear for PMP certification?

Hi I am a software professional with 11 years of experience. My role and experience is Technical consultant. I am playing the role of Individual contributor. I don’t get involved in project manager activities.

I’d like to move to project management and like to give PMP certification. Am I eligible for PMP ? Do I have to attend any prep course?

Thanks for reply. In my case I did not participate in project initiation and closure etc. As mentioned my role has been of individual contributor.

How can I get eligibility for PMP? If I attend 35 hours formal training, am i eligible for PMP?

To obtain the PMP credential, you must first demonstrate that you are eligible by meeting either of the following eligibility requirements set by Project Management Institute (PMI).

These PMP Eligibility Requirements/criteria has been set by PMI to ensure that any Project Staff who applies and subsequently, clears PMP Examination successfully possess Relevant Work Experience and undergoes formal/structured Project Management Education for at least 35 Contact Hours (Typically Four Days Training Program).

This is to ensure that any project staff across industry verticals who even applies for PMP Certification Exam, is well versed with Best Practices in Project Management – in line with PMI’s Guide to Project Management Body of Knowledge.

Now, Let me tell you more about the PMP Exam. Its a four hour exam consisting of 200 questions. Out of this 200, 25 questions are not scored. But beware; you will not know which these 25 questions are! So you should answer all 200 questions, with same seriousness.
PMI includes these questions to see how many test takers are getting them right. Based on this, they might decide to include these questions in future Exam. Its like a survey conducted by PMI.
The pass marks for the exam is 141 out of 175, which roughly translates to 81%! Now, you must be guessing that PMP exam is not that easy. You are right! Taking PMP exam does require certain seriousness in preparation.
Next, I have shown in the table on how many questions appear from which part of the syllabus.
Getting confused with so many new terms Hold on for a moment! You will learn them in the next slide.
For now, assume them to be the six major topics and percentage of questions that typically comes from each of these topics.

Transcript for Project Life Cycle v/s Project Management Process:

We have already explained you “The Project Lifecycle” in Lesson 2. Project Lifecycle basically tells what one needs to do to get the project work done and we also informed you that it’s different for different industries.
For example, in Software Industry, the typical Project Life Cycle is Requirement Analysisà Design à Codingà Testing à Installationà Operations and Support.
Whereas the Project Management Process are “What to do”, “to manage the Project”.
Now, managing the project is same across Industry. Let’s take an example of a Project Management Process, “Develop Schedule”. One needs to develop the project schedule, be it any Industry.
The Project Management Processes are divided into 5 process groups and these groups are:
Initiating Process Groups
Planning Process Groups
Executing Process Groups
Monitoring and Control Process Groups
Closing Process Groups
For small project, one might have to go through, from Initiating phase till the closing phase only once.
For bigger projects, however, the whole cycle may be repeated multiple times, whenever the project re-enters a new phase
Let’s look at graphically in the next slide to see how these processes are related.
